I know the pain of suffering, watching loved ones engulfed in illness and the grief associated with family members passing away. Witnessing a loved one face an abrupt medical condition or longer-term illness can create deep confusion, anger, sadness, and an overwhelming feeling of what to expect next. One of my children was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease and this quickly threw us into unknown territory. He went from a very social, active, high achieving student to an anxious and fearful boy. OCD symptoms appeared, tics, separation anxiety and life became ovewhelming for us all. It took almost 2 months to discover the diagnosis of PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Disease Associated with Strep) and about 3 years until recovery.

Feeling isolated and alone, while lacking the motivation to climb out of a mild or deep depression can feel overwhelming. Anxiety may isolate and brush over your whole being, causing a debilitating or fight-flight-freeze reaction. Many people develop adaptive ways of functioning that often date back to childhood learned patterns. Workaholism, substance abuse, over exercising and/or social isolation are just distractions and bandaids. These coping mechanisms may serve a purpose and allow one to keep moving forward, however you many also wish to feel more relaxed, desire a sense of calm and yearn for internal healing. You deserve to explore alternative paths and realize new ways of living life to the fullest.

Externalizing the problem (Narrtive therapy) and creating space for mindfulness exercise can help to manage intrusive thoughts or the heaviness of emotional challenges.
